Weight Loss Program
Rupal Mohan, M.D.

Losing weight and keeping it off isn’t about a quick crash diet or detox–it requires creating lasting habits to lead a healthier lifestyle. It involves training of the mind and the body.

Introduction
Our program incorporates the most current knowledge and methods of treating obesity. It is a physician-supervised, easy to follow, step by step program that will have everlasting health benefits if followed correctly. We educate our patients to adopt a healthy, long term approach to eating. We discuss the desired weight and the timeline to achieve it.
Weight loss of 5 to 7 percent of body weight carries numerous health benefits and should be sought as an initial weight loss goal. We then step it up gradually and tailor it to your metabolic profile.
Weight loss of 10  percent can reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus.

General Approach
To implement a successful dietary intervention, we typically perform a brief 24-hour dietary recall during the office visit. Labs are ordered at the initial visit. An EKG may be ordered. Our providers discuss the elements of a successful behavioral weight loss program. They will start a spreadsheet that you are required to bring in at every follow up visit.
We educate you on the importance of not only what to eat but when to eat. It is important to eat in a defined window of 8 hrs. So, your body is not pumping out Insulin in the remaining 16 hrs. This is called Intermittent fasting. It has tremendous benefits on your cardiovascular health as well as longevity and cancer prevention besides weight loss.
We recommend a modified ketogenic diet that is rich in good fats and low in carbohydrates and has a moderate amount of protein.  This allows breakdown of your fat stores producing ketone bodies, which will spill into the urine–this is ketosis. When in ketosis, most people lose their appetite, which helps cut down the cravings and makes it easier to follow the weight loss program. To compensate for water and electrolyte losses, adequate hydration with electrolyte tablets is needed. We also emphasize an anti-inflammatory diet that fights insulin resistance and wards off diseases like diabetes and cancer.
We recommend a minimum of 30 minutes of daily exercise to improve insulin sensitivity and for cardiovascular benefit. For weight loss, 45 to 60 minutes a day is ideal.
Our providers will prescribe medications if they feel that you would benefit from them. We also offer B12/MIC shots every 2 weeks.

Follow-Ups
It is extremely important to be seen regularly while following this program. Visits to the physician are scheduled every 2 weeks after you are placed on this program. Electrolytes and ketones are also monitored at these visits.

Behavior Modification
Modification techniques are taught to help change old eating habits which lead to weight gain and develop new ones which promote weight maintenance. Only a serious effort on your part to change old habits will help you maintain your desired weight.
